Abbotsford resident Ike Klassen has recently weathered some terrible events.
Five weeks ago Alvina, his wife of 50-plus years, suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed on one side and unable to speak.
Two weeks later Klassen suffered a major heart attack and an ensuing surgery necessary to save his life.
So he was flabbergasted last week to find out he had won the $5,000 Stage it Forward - Give Back benefit.
The event spearheaded by Katie Matthewman, owner and founder of Fine Redesign Home Staging and Decor, was developed to help a homeowner having difficult times get their house looking its best in order to sell it quickly and for top dollar.
Klassen, who was nominated by his realtor Richard Friesen of Re/Max Little Oak Realty, won a professional painting package, got credit for new carpets and flooring, and free landscaping and cleaning services.
"It's great," said Klassen who said his three-story home at 2641 Zurich Drive has been humming with activity for three days.
"I never expected it."
The Klassens had decided to sell their family home this October when they realized the upkeep of the house and property was more than they could manage.
But the need to sell their home became critical when it was clear Alvina would need constant caring in a long-term care facility and Ike needed a new home closer to his wife.
"I can't keep this place up by myself," he said.
Matthewman said the objective of the contest was to help Ike sell his home speedily and for more money.
"It's is a tough market out there right now, and if we can help someone who has fallen on hard times with a chance to sell faster and at a better price, our hope is that will help them as they move on to a new chapter in their lives."
Alvina broke down and cried bitterly when she comprehended her situation, said Ike.
However, that same day she began to try to walk, and is determined to make a recovery, he said.
Klassen is also preparing for this new stage in his life and remains optimistic.
"I always try to see the positive," he said.
An open house for the Klassen home is set for Dec. 5.
