Federal corrections officers seized 37 grams of heroin from an inmate at Mission Institution on Oct. 1. The institution reports that correctional officers, a dog team and security intelligence officers intercepted an inmate who was planning to sell the drugs in the medium security prison.
The total "institutional value" of the seizure is estimated to be $7,400, reported the Correctional Service of Canada.
Mission RCMP have been contacted and are investigating.
The CSC uses several tools to try to control the flow of drugs into federal penitentiaries, including ion scanners and drug dogs to search buildings, offenders and visitors.
CSC also has a telephone tip-line at all federal institutions as an additional source for receiving information about activities that relate to the safety and security in the prisons.
These may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of people visiting, working at or housed at a CSC facility.
The toll-free tip-line number is 1-866780-3784 and callers remain anonymous.
