Virgin Radio's roller coaster marathon

Scott Shantz loves Playland's famed wooden roller coaster and always wished the ride would be a bit longer.

This morning he should find out just how much he loves it.

The Abbotsford-born and raised Shantz was scheduled to ride the classic coaster 100 times to commemorate the Pacific National Exhibition's 100th anniversary.

Shantz is also known as Scooter Producer, the effervescent producer of Virgin Radio Vancouver's morning show, Breakfast with Nat and Jeff.

"We like to celebrate in fun and creative ways. Our motto is 'go big or go home'," said Shantz, who is 28 and a 2000 graduate of W.J. Mouat Secondary in Abbotsford. "This was fun way to celebrate the PNE's 100th."

Shantz' roller coaster of a day was to begin bright and early today at 6 a.m., before Playland officially opens.

The ride itself lasts 90 seconds, and with the unloading and loading, each ride should take about two minutes. However, by our calculations, the PNE folks will give Shantz a few extra minutes here and there for, um, accidents.

He'll be joined by a few lucky listeners for a few rides. If Shantz completes the 100 rides, he'll make history.

"The PNE folks said they have no records for this. Once this is finished, I'll likely have the record for the most consecutive rides (at Playland)," said Shantz, who also went through BCIT's broadcaster program.

How is he preparing?

"I'll eat a lot of mini-donuts," he kidded. "Really, I plan to get a good night's sleep. Really, I'm going to hope for the best."
