Restaurant 62 takes to the (online) airwaves

Good things are cooking in all corners of the local business world

Abbotsford's Restaurant 62 has launched a unique online series of cooking webisodes, at www.r62tv.com, which features culinary instruction and wine education by Restaurant 62 executive chef Jeff Massey and sommelier and general manager Eric Ferris.

It also has a recipe database, daily articles, an interactive Ask Chef Jeff feature, plus online wine sales - all designed to enhance and expand the overall Restaurant 62 experience. Burnaby's Gloo Studios and Internal Wealth Studios in Chilliwack produce the show.

The team at Restaurant 62 has also earned the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 2010 for the third year in a row.

The only Fraser Valley restaurant to earn the award, it was selected by Wine Spectator Magazine for its outstanding wine menu, and named one of North America's top restaurants for fine wine. The award recipients were highlighted in the Aug. 31 issue of Wine Spectator. See more at visit www.restaurant62.ca.

CHAMBER GOES TO ZAJAC RANCH

The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is giving their members and others an opportunity on Oct. 6 to visit the Zajac Ranch for Children, a 40-acre camp on Stave Lake that was created by the Zajac Foundation to give chronically ill children a real camp experience. Surrounded by Crown lands and complete with an indoor salt water pool, the facility is also open for groups seeking a quiet, revitalizing West Coast experience or an adventure with high ropes activities, horse back riding, archery, field games and trail running. Great for corporate team building or wellness retreats. Transportation is provided, but pre-registration is a must. Contact the chamber office at 604-826-6914.

FACEBOOK FUNDING

Abbotsford is vying for funds from a Facebook charity campaign called Be Remarkable. British Columbia's 45 credit unions are enlisting young B.C. adults to help them give $100,000 to local charities in 16 regions. Every time a Facebook user tags a friend in photos of their region or town, B.C.'s credit unions will donate $1 to a local charity. Since its launch Sept. 7, more than 50,000 tags have been generated. Fraser Valley albums were in the top five this month, having received more than 3,225 tags.

Thirty-two charities are eligible to receive the funds, two from each region. Each charity focuses on issues important to young adults such as sports, culture, education, health and the environment.

The two charities in the Fraser Valley are the University of the Fraser Valley and Abbotsford Community Services.

FHA UP FOR CONSERVATION AWARD

The Fraser Health Authority is a finalist for the BC Hydro's Power Smart Excellence Awards, in the Energy Manager category. Energy-efficient upgrades are saving the FHA 4.3 gigawatt hours per year, enough to power 391 homes. The next series of upgrades will save an additional 3.3 gigawatt hours and $300,000 in annual energy costs. FHA's sustainable energy management plan is shared with other B.C. health authorities as a model of what can be achieved through technical and behavioral changes.

The plan allows for information sharing by facility managers, including monthly targets, to encourage discussion around methods for improvement.

Fifty-three finalists are named in 15 categories. BC Hydro will announce award recipients on Oct. 25 in Vancouver. The province has set a goal of becoming electricity self-sufficient by 2016.
