The trial of a man accused of murdering an Abbotsford man after allegedly shooting him in the chest during an argument is underway in Chilliwack Supreme Court this week.
Robert Kenneth Hogan, 40, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Alexander Vincent Paul in 2009.
Jury selection for the trial took place Feb. 6 and it has been scheduled for a total of 30 days, according to the court registry.
Abbotsford Police got a panic-stricken call reporting a heated dispute involving a gun from someone at a residence in the 3800 block of the Inter Provincial Highway at 9:45 p.m. on July 7, 2009.
Officers arrived at Hogan's rented mobile home in Sumas Prairie to find that Paul, 32, had been fatally shot.
Hogan was arrested on scene.
Investigators described Hogan and Paul as associates but said the death did not appear to be related to drugs, gangs or organized crime.
A month before his death, Paul had been caught up in the media attention around another murder.
The body of one of his roommates, Angela Crossman, was discovered along an Agassiz forestry road on June 11, 2009.
Crossman, 39, had been staying temporarily with Paul and another roommate, Ian Michael Hewitt, at their Abbotsford home in the 3200 block of Hillcrest Street.
Immediately after Crossman's death, Paul had told the media he'd driven Crossman to a hospital visit on June 10 but said he had nothing to do with the 39-year-old's death.
Almost a year later, homicide investigators arrested and charged Paul's former friend and roommate Ian Hewitt with murder in Crossman's death.
Crossman was originally from New Brunswick but had moved to B.C. a year before her death.
She settled in Abbotsford, where she had lived two years prior, and reportedly had lived next door to Hewitt at one point for six months.
Hewitt is next scheduled to appear for a preliminary inquiry in Chilliwack provincial court on April 3.
