Play with Fire a B.C. beaut

Indie film showing at The Reach next Friday

Indie film is the new Indie music, thanks to new technologies that enable lovers of cinema to produce and release independent films.

One of the thousands out there that managed to get critical attention is Play with Fire, which will launch on a province-wide promotional tour at The Reach Nov. 5.

The film, co-produced by emerging Vancouver filmmakers Soren Johnstone and Michael Babiarz, is an experiment in low-budget filmmaking.

With the beauty and grit of small town Trail as the backdrop, they use natural light, and non-actors, capturing through the lens "something that was not only raw and visceral, but something beautiful," Babiarz said.

Play with Fire premiered June 2009 at Toronto's The ReelHeART International Film Festival and earned the RHIFF's Best Cinematography award.

"If you're a fan of cinematography you need to see this film for the gorgeous exteriors. Filmed like a Merchant Ivory film, with practically no money. This is a gritty story that's beautiful to watch," said the RHIFF programmer's notes.

The film looks at challenges to loyalty, love and loss, as it follows the unsettled life of 28-year old Christian, who wastes his days with meaningless activities, selling drugs to get by. His girlfriend wants him to discover a new life in the big city, but then his longtime friend comes up with a risky plan to make some cash, and the conflict begins.

The show is Nov. 5, doors at 7 p.m., film at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at The Reach, 32388 Veterans Way, Abbotsford. Call 604-864-8087 or e-mail info@thereach.ca for more details, or see www.playwithfiremovie.com.
