Good on Gerda for taking a stand

Editor, the Times:

Thanks are due to Gerda Peachey for her stalwart defence of scientific evidence and common sense ('Cash comes from those who work hard', Times, Feb. 7).

Her valiant defense of the best interests of drug users is self-evident, as is the defence of the establishment appointees of the Fraser Health Authority for their jobs.

Let's face it - no addicts, no need of the Fraser Health Authority's so-called "experts" in dealing with addicts. "Just keep 'em hooked, and we're guaranteed our jobs," seems to be the operative mantra of the appointees.

How many of us would give booze to an alcoholic?

But, just suggest that we deny a hit to an addict, and we're accused of not being "informed" or "compassionate" to those who are looking for another "hit".

Thank you again, Gerda Peachey, for your real concern for the well-being of unfortunate addicts, and to those of us who entirely agree with you but, like you, are denied a voice and ridiculed for our genuine loving concern for them.
