Across Canada, provinces have either changed - or are planning changes – to their condo laws, following outcry that the existing rules are inadequate, vague, or non-existent. A series of public hearings are to be held in March over proposals to overhaul rules governing the purchase and maintenance of condos in Quebec.
Ontario’s condo laws have partly inspired these proposals, as can be seen in the chart below. But critics in Quebec and Ontario say both provinces need to establish basic qualifications for condo property managers, who aren’t licensed but administer budgets worth millions of dollars.
Real-estate reporter Allison Lampert explores the issue in Saturday's Gazette, and will lead a chat with real-estate experts Mary Lamey and Daniel Rafuse Monday at noon, at live.montrealgazette.com.
