The driver of the vehicle that struck another vehicle on the Mission Bridge Thursday afternoon and left a six-car pile-up in his or her wake kept on driving, and it’s unlikely the driver will ever be identified, say police.

The incident happened in the southbound lanes on the bridge at about 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 9, just at the start of rush hour.

“It was initiated when one vehicle side-swiped another, and that started a chain reaction. The suspect vehicle kept going. There was one injured person who was taken to the hospital with soft tissue injuries, it was not life-threatening. Luckily, no one was seriously injured,” said Mission RCMP Const. Jason Boon.

Unfortunately, none of the people involved in the crash were able to get the licence plate number of the suspect vehicle or a description, he said.

“So there was little we could do in terms of tracking that vehicle,” said Boon.

No alcohol involved any of the crashed vehicles.

The southbound lanes were closed for about four hours for investigation and to be cleared of debris.

However, there was also ongoing congestion in the open northbound lanes as drivers slowed to see what was going on.

“It made a significant impact on the Rockin’ River Music Fest in Mission, and affected the number of people attending the event,” said Boon.

“[Northbound lanes] were not obstructed but people were slowing down to look at the all the emergency vehicles, causing a massive congestion. We had tow trucks and ambulance and five police vehicles at the scene,” said Boon.
