Two Abbotsford families are safe after narrowly escaping two separate residential fires early Sunday morning.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was called out to a house fire at 28412 River Road at 6:33 a.m.

Fire crews arrived to find a mobile home engulfed in flames.

The two occupants had gotten out safe after being woken by the sound of crackling from a blaze adjacent to their wood stove.

Firefighters couldn't contain the fire, which spread rapidly and destroyed the mobile home, said assistant fire chief Jeff Adams in a press release.

Little more than an hour later, fire crews responded to a blaze at a house at 33562 Clayburn Road at 7:44 a.m.

Firefighters found the single-storey home emitting heavy smoke and flames.

The sole occupant awoke to the sound of breaking glass and had to escape out the bedroom window after being trapped in the room due to the heat and smoke.

The resident was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke exposure but was fortunate not to have suffered serious injury, said Adams.

AFRS managed to extinguish the blaze but the wooden home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage estimated to be more than $75,000.

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of both fires, neither of which are considered suspicious.

However, it was discovered both homes did not have working smoke alarms, which are required by law.

Smoke alarms are critical to detecting a fire early and giving people precious time to escape, noted Adams.
