Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service has extended the citywide burning ban until Oct. 15.

The record breaking dry spell and the extreme forest fire rating has necessitated the extension of the ban, said acting Fire Chief Dale Unrau in a press release.

Abbotsford traditionally imposes a yearly ban on all outdoor burning between June 1 and Sept. 30 to reduce the potential of wild fires endangering lives and property.

However, due to the lack of rain, the ban has been extended until Oct. 15 with a possible further extension if dry conditions continue.

There is a $500 fine for discarding burning substances, including cigarettes, and for outdoor burning during the ban.

People accidentally cause fires may also be charged cost recovery fees or face criminal charges.
