Under heavy security, Jamie Bacon made his first court appearance Wednesday following the severance of his trial in the Surrey Six murder case from his co-accused. Bacon entered not-guilty pleas on a new indictment on one count of conspiring to murder Corey Lal, one of the six victims in the October 2007 gangland slayings, and one count in the first-degree murder of Lal. Those are the same charges to which he had pleaded not guilty in the original indictment filed in the case. During the brief appearance in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, Bacon was also ordered to have no contact with his three co-accused - Cody Rae Haevischer, Matthew James Johnston and Quang Vinh Thang "Michael" Lee - who are now being tried on a separate indictment. B.C. Supreme Court Associate Chief Justice Austin Cullen also reimposed an order that Bacon have no contact with Dennis Karbovanec, who earlier pleaded guilty in the murder case. Bacon, wearing an open-neck white dress shirt and dark pants, sat quietly during the court appearance, which came only two days after the first anniversary of the gangland slaying of his elder brother, Jonathan Bacon, outside a Kelowna casino. No charges have been laid in that murder, but police say the investigation is progressing. Click here to read more stories from The Province.
