Abbotsford residents' cancer files may be incomplete

Abbotsford residents who had consultations around genetic cancer may have had their files mishandled.

The B.C. Cancer Agency wants to hear from Abbotsford residents who accessed counselling through the Hereditary Cancer Program between August and December 2010.

The BCCA reopened files on nearly 200 patients after discovering a genetic counsellor mishandled cases.

Some may be from the Abbotsford area.

All but four of the 192 patients have been contacted and offered both instructions and apologies, said Dr. Barb McGillivray, medical director of the Hereditary Cancer Program.

The counsellor has been "relieved of her duties" for failing to properly document information after providing patients with genetic counselling.

The decision to probe each patient file was made late last year, but the BCCA did not publicly disclose the investigation until The Vancouver Sun asked about it Monday.

BCCA is still trying to contact four patients who received counselling in Surrey or Abbotsford between August and December 2010, and have not been contacted.

They are asked to call 604-877-6000, local 2198.
