Abbotsford got $890,000 dollars on Tuesday in flood protection funding from senior levels of government that will go upgrades at the Barrowtown Pump Station.

Abbotsford was one of 20 B.C. communities that received a portion of $36 million in flood mitigation funds aimed at meeting local infrastructure needs and supporting economic growth.

The Abbotsford funds, derived from the federal Building Canada Plan and the province's Territorial Base Fund, will go toward the second phase of a project to upgrade Barrowtown's electrical and control systems.

The cost of the project is $1,335,000, with the senior levels of government covering two-thirds of the funding and local governments and diking authorities covering the remainder.

The Barrowtown Pump Station was constructed in the late 1970s and is the sole drainage point for approximately 16,000 acres of prime agricultural land.

It also provides drainage and protection for Highway 1, BC Hydro powerlines, a railway line and underground gas transmission lines.

The Barrowtown project will extend the service life of the station for up to 25 years.
