When it comes to politicians, everyone wants to see some checks and balances, right?

But when it comes to street hockey, seeing politicians getting checked off balance can be just as good.

Surrey's local MLAs, from both sides of the floor, are expected to team up for a game against homeless players when Whalley stages its second annual Toque Tuesday street hockey event outside the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre on Feb. 5th.

"They'll be on the same team," organizer Tim Baillie said of the rival MLAs. "And this is just a couple months before the election."

Baillie joked that there are no rules against teammates hitting each other.

The retired Surrey firefighter organized last year's Toque Tuesday hockey day, which served to create awareness about the plight of the homeless, especially during these cold winter months.

This year, there will be a hot-dog barbeque like last year, and players and everyone else (not the homeless though) are being encouraged to bring toques, winter shoes, winter coats and warm socks to give to people living on the street.

Baillie said there will be four 20-minute games, with the first starting at 10 a.m. That one will be Surrey firefighters against Surrey Mounties, followed by the Mixed MLAs team versus the homeless, and then Douglas College versus an all-women team. Baillie said he hopes the last of the four will see B.C. Lions square off against the Surrey Eagles, but that has yet to be confirmed.
