Charges laid against former fugitive Chaffey

A fugitive described as armed and dangerous who was arrested by a tactical police squad on June 13 is now facing several new charges stemming from his time eluding police capture.

Ryan James Chaffey, 30, was taken into custody after several tips from the public alerted police to his whereabouts in the 1000 block of Ross Road in Abbotsford.

Chaffey, who has previous convictions for robbery, assault and escape from custody, was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant after failing to check in with parole officers on May 31.

Major crime detectives pieced together his movements, and along with witness information and security-camera footage Abbotsford police were able to recommend charges on five counts of robbery and one count of possession of stolen property.

Chaffey is believed to have robbed several local businesses between June 3 and June 10, producing a knife in two, and a wrench in one of the incidents, police said.

Const. Ian MacDonald with the Abbotsford police said the hard work of detectives paid off.

"Even in the early stages of these robberies occurring, we considered him to be a suspect."

The robberies involved three fast-food outlets, a gas station and one individual, MacDonald said, adding a sixth charge involving a pet store being robbed is most likely going to be added to Chaffey's list.

"We don't think robberies happen in ones. When there is someone either desperate or brazen enough to pull a robbery, they usually do a string., and that's what we saw," MacDonald said.

"[This] is an excellent example of how we can have a one-person crime wave happen."
