One Abbotsford youngster with a heart of gold and a voice to match will hold a fundraising night for Cyrus Centre, an emergency shelter and drop-in centre for at-risk teens.
Brook Harris will hold a Teens for Teens concert on June 15 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, with special guest and Canadian Idol, Greg Neufeld.
Harris will also releasie her first CD, No More.
The Grade 8 student is inviting youngsters from local middle and high schools in Abbotsford to raise funds for at-risk and homeless teens who are supported by Cyrus Centre. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the centre.
Last winter Harris, now 14, held a fundraising night with a coffeehouse performance at the Gourmet Gallery in Abbotsford.
She not only packed the house with teenagers, she also raised more than $1,000 for Cyrus Centre.
Since she heard about the work they do at Cyrus, Harris has become an unofficial advocate for the youth centre, talking to kids not only at her school but also other schools and venues in the community to raise awareness about the challenges faced by some teenagers in the community.
Helping young people her age who have lost so much was "something I need to do," Harris said in December.
"As soon as I heard about the kids on the street, kic- ked out of their homes, it really got to me. There are kids out there just like me, who have lost so much," she said.
Harris was a Top 10 finalist in the Valley Voices competition last year and in the 2008 B.C. Idol, as well as a runner up in the 2007 B.C. Junior Talent Search.
She's also been a regular at the Abbotsford Heat home games, belting out O Canada.
Tickets are $15 and they are available at the House of James, at 2743 Emerson St., Abbotsford (604-852-3701). Harris is also performing there as a guest of the Watchman Four on June 12 at 8 p.m.
