One of a trio of suspects charged in a vicious hammer attack on a man in Mission has been sentenced to 10 months behind bars.
Dustin Dale Braaten, 27, was convicted of aggravated assault in Chilliwack Supreme Court on Jan. 30.
Braaten was originally charged with unlawful confinement, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in connection with the attack that took place on Dec. 1, 2010.
Mission RCMP discovered a 24-year-old Abbotsford man bound with zap straps and badly beaten in the 36000 block of the Lougheed Highway at 11:25 p.m. that day, said RCMP Sgt. Miriam Dickson.
The victim had been beaten with a hammer and was lying in the middle of the highway west of Sylvester Road suffering from back, head and facial injuries.
RCMP later determined the victim had been attacked in the basement of a nearby home.
Braaten, who has an extensive criminal record, was on probation for a theft conviction in Mission when he assaulted the victim.
Braaten also has a number of convictions in Kamloops including theft, possession of stolen property, break and enter, willfully resisting a police officer, criminal harassment and breach violations.
Matthew Bouwknecht and Loni Fisher are also charged with unlawful confinement, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in connection to the hammer attack.
They are scheduled to appear for a pretrial conference in Chilliwack Supreme Court on April 13.
