A former Abbotsford Police officer fired and charged with obstruction after crashing a police car and lying to his superiors is dropping his appeal to dispute his dismissal from the force.

Const. Nathan Brown was dismissed in March 2012 after a police investigation alleged he was impaired by alcohol when he crashed a police vehicle, then lied to supervisors to cover up the incident.

Brown applied to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner for a public hearing to review his dismissal.

However, on Dec. 10 the OPCC got a letter from Brown's lawyer asking the agency to cancel the hearing.

As such, Brown's dismal for deceit and the 10-day suspension without pay for discreditable conduct will remain in effect.

The APD outlined allegations of professional misconduct against Brown, a five-year member of the APD, to the OPCC soon after the April 14, 2011 crash.

Brown allegedly consumed alcohol in the police union lounge that night then drove his assigned police vehicle - against the advice of a senior officer - and hit a pole on his way home.

The next day Brown told supervisors that he had been in a collision on his way to work.

The OPCC investigated the case and the claims against Brown were substantiated.

Brown was also charged with obstruction and is scheduled to go to trial in Abbotsford provincial court on Feb. 5.
