Abbotsford’s golden girl and soccer sensation, Sophie Schmidt, who brought home bronze from the London Olympics when they beat France 1-0 in the final minute of extra time, will be in Abbotsford on Tuesday to meet all her fans.

“This is where I grew up and played all my soccer here,” she said. “I’m excited to see everyone and give back where I can.”

She will also be bringing her bronze medal so everyone can see it up close and get autographs and photos of Schmidt.

She will be at Magnuson Ford on South Fraser Way at 1 p.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 21) and the folks in the dealership couldn’t be more thrilled.

“We’re really excited to have her,” said owner Layne Magnuson, who tweeted her yesterday after she and the rest of the Canadian women’s soccer team landed to an onslaught of fans and media at YVR in Richmond.

Magnuson Ford has been the naming sponsor for the Abbotsford Soccer Association since 2010 and is integral in promoting soccer for kids of all ages.

It starts at the ground level, as Schmidt knows all too well, having started playing at the age of eight in Abbotsford.

“The support of my coaches and teammates and parents helped me get where I am today,” said Schmidt.

The women’s soccer team was also honoured last night at the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer game at B.C. Place.

Schmidt has a special message for all her hometown fans.

“Dreams do come true and dream big and enjoy the process, because anything is possible.”

Magnuson Ford is located at 32562 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford. Schmidt will be in the showroom at 1 p.m. Bring your camera.
