A man suspected of a sex assault is in custody after Mission RCMP and the emergency response team surrounded a home on 2nd Avenue for most of Tuesday morning.

Mission RCMP Const. Brenton Brady said that the suspect, reportedly seen entering the home earlier, turned himself in to another Lower Mainland police department later in the day.

The RCMP originally attended the house in the 33400 block of 2nd Avenue around 4 a.m. in response to a complaint about a serious sex assault.

Police shut 2nd Avenue east of Murray Street as it was believed the man, well known to police and possibly armed, might have barricaded himself inside the home.

The Lower Mainland District Regional Police Service ERT team and its armoured tactical vehicle arrived at 7 a.m.

A RCMP negotiator was also called out.

The name of the suspect hasn't been released.

Brady said the investigation is ongoing and he couldn't reveal whether the sex assault actually took place in the home or at a different location.

A Mission RCMP officer blocks the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Murray Street on Tuesday morning when it was believed a suspect had barricaded himself inside a nearby home. It turned out the man wasn't at the home, but turned himself into police later in the day.
Mission RCMP have cordoned off 2nd Avenue east of Murray street so the emergency response team can deal with a man suspected of barricading himself in nearby home.
