TransLink is raising fares for the West Coast Express by 12.5 per cent in the new year.

As of Jan. 1, commuters who ride the train running from Mission to Vancouver will pay $335.75 for a five-zone pass, up from $298.50.

An adult one-zone monthly pass will rise to $151.75 from $134.75.

An adult weekly pass will cost $101.50, up from $97.50 while a one-way fare will jump to $12.25, up from $11.25.

The fare hike for the WCE - and the 10 per cent hike for most of the rest of the Metro Vancouver transit system - is the result of a retroactive increase of two per cent a year since 2008 when fares were last raised, according to TransLink's Tuesday press release.

The increase reflects five years of inflationary costs and will support operations and keep the transit system in good repair, stated TransLink.

The West Coast Express, which was launched in 1995, provides more than 2.8 million trips annually.

Each weekday, 11,000 riders get on or off at the eight West Coast Express stations between Mission and downtown Vancouver.
