The wife of a 22-year-old Abbotsford man who died in a suspected drinking and driving crash said she harbours no anger against the driver, a good friend of her husband's.

Brian Patchett, a father of two, was returning home early Sunday from a party at a friend's house when the vehicle he was in hit a concrete barrier and hydro pole on Vye Road near Sumas Way and flipped over.

He died at the scene.

"It's sad that one momentary lapse in judgment can have such a colossal effect," said Liz Squires Monday.

"It makes it more devastating knowing this could be more preventable."

Squires and Patchett met as eight-year-olds at Sunday school.

They attended the same high school and got married in 2007.

"He had a lot of life in him," said Squires, 22. "He loved life. He had great charisma ... and he loved making people laugh."

Patchett, a furniture store delivery man, also loved spending time with their kids, Kieran, 4, and Savannah, who is almost three.

"He would make up games with them, and have little adventures in the creek."

Squires said her Christian faith and the support of family and friends are helping her get through the tragedy.

She feels a deep sadness and has cried many tears, but feels no anger.

"I hope to see the driver would just feel a real change of heart, and have a greater understanding of drunk driving and the effects it can have."

A woman who was in the back seat of the vehicle remains in hospital in stable but serious condition, said Const. Ian MacDonald of the Abbotsford Police Department.

Officers found her outside the car and believe she crawled out after the accident.

The driver and another female passenger sustained minor injuries.

The family will hold a funeral service for Patchett at Sevenoaks Alliance Church in Abbotsford on Friday, with a private family-only burial scheduled afterwards.
