Two men were sent to hospital on Monday following two serious crashes in Abbotsford.

An 88-year-old man is in critical condition after being struck by a car while riding his mobility scooter.

The senior was hit by a Mazda CX-7 station wagon at the intersection of George Ferguson Way and West Bourquin at 9:30 a.m., said Const. Ian MacDonald.

Witnesses report the Mazda, headed eastbound on George Ferguson Way, failed to stop for a red light and struck the man as he was moving through the crosswalk, said MacDonald.

The 38-year-old female driver remained on scene and cooperated with police.

"It's likely as the investigation unfolds she'll be facing charges but whether they fall under the Motor Vehicle Act or will be criminal charges is yet to be determined," said MacDonald.

Later in the day a cyclist was struck by a truck and suffered injuries at the intersection of Marshall Road and Abbotsford Way at 5:40 p.m. The 53-year-old man was riding on the sidewalk and coasting down the hill on Marshall at a high speed, said MacDonald.

The bike and a truck making a left turn off Abbotsford Way onto Marshall entered the intersection simultaneously, and the resulting collision sent the cyclist flying.

"He collides with the side of the truck and goes airborne and lands, suffering a variety of injuries, including a head injury as he wasn't wearing a helmet," said MacDonald.

Police are cautioning drivers to be watchful for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, especially with the ongoing warm weather. But pedestrians and those not in cars also have to mindful of their own safety, MacDonald added.

"Basically, we all have watch out for each other."
