Jacob Doerksen, considered to be the greatest basketball player to ever play for the Trinity Western University Spartans, signed his first pro contract with Germany's United Basketball Club (UBC) Tigers, the university announced Wednesday.
The UBC Tigers play in the Bundesliga ProB league.
Doerksen, a native of Abbotsford, played five seasons with the Spartans, helping the team to its best ever finish in CIS competition - a silver medal at the national championships earlier this year.
He was also a Canada West All-Star in each of the five seasons he played, CIS Rookie of the Year in 2006 and CIS Player of the Year in 2009. He also holds the Spartans record for most points scored in a game with 42, which happened on Dec. 4, 2010 in a game against the UFV Cascades.
Moving to a totally different part of the world may be the best part of all this for Doerksen.
"The unknown is the most exciting part," Doerksen said in a statement from Hannover, Germany.
"I came over here with very few details and everyday so far is a new experience with new challenges. I have pretty much been dropped in a foreign country with an apartment and a job. It is surreal indeed."__
