WHISTLER -- Switzerland's Carlo Janka has captured the men's giant slalom at the Winter Olympics.

Janka took the gold, his first Olympic medal, in a combined time of two minutes, 37.83 seconds. That was 39 one-hundredths of a second faster than Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud. Fellow Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal won bronze to earn his third medal of these Games.

Janka, who finished fourth in Sunday's super combined race, led by just two one-hundredths of a second after the morning run. He built on that lead with a strong second run in the afternoon that knocked Jansrud down to second.

American Bode Miller, who was searching for his fourth medal of the Games, failed to complete his first run.

Eric Guay of Mont Tremblant, Que., started the second run in 29th place but turned in a strong afternoon run to finish 16th in a time of 2:39.63.
