Steven Sykorsky is one strong guy. He proved it when he won the gold medal for bench press and powerlifting at the BC Pow-erlifting Association Championship Nov. 3 at the Abbotsford Arts Centre.
Sykorsky, 28, competed in the Special Olympics division against seven others in his weight class, dead lifting about 300 pounds and bench pressing 205 pounds to claim the gold.
"This is basically what I live for," he said recently at the Creative Centre Society in Abbotsford that sponsors him. "Winning medals is the main reason why I live."
He explained that his uncles were weightlifters and tough but "they didn't win medals."
Sykorsky trains at Big Land Mammals gym in Abbotsford and credits his trainers Joel Klassen and Jeff Toms with his success. He likes working out and training at the local facility.
"All the guys joke around," he said. "It's fun to be part of that group."
He's now gearing up for his next competition to be held in Richmond in February.
