The BC Short Track Speed Skating Provincials came to the Mission Leisure Centre last weekend and by all accounts, the event was a success.
"It was absolutely brilliant," said Bruce Wenting, president of the Mission Racers, which hosted the event. "We were four skaters short of our optimum 100 skaters and we got huge co-operation from the District of Mission."
Ninety-six skaters came for the two-day meet from all over the province, from Fort St. John, Prince George, Nechako Valley, Nelson, Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.
Two Mission Racers skaters who did not compete last weekend, Caelin McNally, 17 and Liz Janze, 18, are headed to the age-class national competition this weekend in Montreal.
Local skaters from the Matsqui Blades who medaled in provincials include: Annabel Johnson, who took gold (age 11 girls), Madison Karpes, bronze (age 13 girls), Alexander Chizawsky, bronze (age 14 boys).
All three have qualified for the Canada West Age Class Championships in Canmore, Alta. later this month.
Derek Chizawsky won bronze in Open Men and Paige Norton took fourth (iron medal) in Open Ladies.
