The series, still widely considered to be arguably the most historically significant international hockey event by many, was won by Canada four games to three, with one tie.

The tournament, started in 1976, saw the Soviets beat Canada for the championship in 1981. Canada returned the favour in 1987.

The highlights of the series were the three games Canada played against the Soviet team. The first game U.S.S.R. beat Canada 6-5 but Canada reversed the score in the following two games beating the Soviets 6-5 in each game.

That year, Canada began a five-year gold medal streak at the World Juniors. The first three of those golds came at the cost of the Russians.
