The defending B.C. Double-A champion Mission Roadrunners are one step closer to a repeat performance as they smoked their northern division rivals, Nechako Valley of Vanderhoof 49-13 in the first round of varsity football playoffs Saturday at B.C. Place.
Quarterback Kevin Wiens threw three touchdown passes, one to Harsh Gill and a pair to Tyler McStravick, and rushed for two others in the lopsided contest.
"He does look better than he's ever looked and he is amazing the way he came back from a pretty serious injury," said Mission head coach Kevin Watrin, referring to Wiens' Achilles tendon tear at the beginning of the season that sidelined the QB for a month.
Wayde Carpenter scored on an interception, returning 47 yards for a TD.
Evan Horton came in at quarterback in the fourth quarter and hit Jesse Walker with a 12-yard scoring strike.
"We just wanted to get off to a good start, stay injury free and work on executing our plays," said Watrin. "But we weren't as polished as we have been this year."
Mission advances to the Subway Bowl quarter-finals where they will play Windsor at 5: 30 p.m. Saturday at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium.
