The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team fell to the AUS Champion Saint Mary’s Huskies, 62-57, in the CIS Final 8’ quarter-final at the University of Regina Friday.

‘Player of the Game’ Sarah Wierks of Chilliwack with 14 points and 11 rebounds led the team.

“Slow start and playing catch-up all night long were problematic for us,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer. “We kept fighting and closed the gap but we didn’t have enough to close the deal.”

The Cascades will now face McGill who led the Canada West champion Regina Cougars for close to three quarters Friday before falling, 68-53, to the host team. The consolation semifinal between UFV and McGill goes at 3 p.m. CST today.

“Playing another conference champion [Saturday], they played Regina extremely tough and we expect them to play with the same tenacity against us. Another great defensive team with some great offensive weapons,” said Tuchscherer.

The consolation semifinal will be broadcast live on CIS web television at www.cis-sic.ca.
