An Abbotsford man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff with RCMP in Whistler on Saturday afternoon.

The RCMP received a call around 3 p.m. regarding a suicidal male from the Lower Mainland who was making his way to the resort town.

Police spotted the man's vehicle and tried to stop it, but the driver continued into Whistler village where he came to a stop in a parking lot.

The 41-year-old man was seen exiting his car with a handgun but RCMP were able to contain him in nearby dirt bike park.

The Lower Mainland emergency response team was called out along with the conflict negotiation team to try and negotiate a peaceful end to the incident.

"Unfortunately, despite our efforts the male suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound," said Whistler RCMP Sgt. Rob Knapton in a press release.

The man was taken to the Whistler Health Clinic for treatment and then to a Lower Mainland hospital.

He was expected to survive his injuries when he was transported, said Knapton.
