Abbotsford student Marcy Walters made some history of her own Tuesday night.

The 11-year-old received a Governor General's award for her heritage fair project developed last year while attending King Traditional Elementary School.

Marcy, now in Grade 6 at Abbotsford Traditional Middle, was honoured at a board of education meeting for her take on the life of explorer Henry Hudson. Marcy said she was thrilled to get the award.

"It was really honouring because I got to meet the top school board people, and I got to talk to them about my project," said Marcy.

The young historian decided to research Hudson, the English sea explorer whose name graces the northern bay he explored and the Hudson's Bay Company, after finding out he and his sons were set adrift after a 1611 mutiny on his ship and were never seen again.

"That fascinated me," said Marcy. "He kind of just disappeared."

Marcy also wrote a story in which she imagined being the only female crew member on Hudson's ship.
