New Year's German-style

December at the Legion
It's always a good time at Vedder Legion Branch 280. Every Friday and Saturday dance to live bands from 8 p.m. until midnight. Solowan Sound plays Dec. 27. The annual New Year's Dance on Dec. 31 is a great night to celebrate. Tickets are limited and traditionally sell out so visit the branch and get yours as soon as possible. Cost is $25 per member and $50 per couple.
Art at Evangeline's
Evangeline's has new art on the wall with the outdoor photography of Garth White. Evangeline's is also pleased to announce the inception of Evangeline's Offsales. No, not booze, but freshly-squeezed o.j., tangy coleslaw dressing, and their top-secret barbecue sauce. They're also selling retro iron-on Evangeline's T-shirts. New Year's at Industry

Ukrainian Christmas
Canadians of Ukrainian heritage celebrate their Christmas and New Year's festivities (Malanka) about two weeks after other Christians. The night of Jan. 6 is the holy evening and will see a traditional 12-course Christmas meal served. Then the Fraser Valley Ukrainian Cultural Society (FVUCS) hosts Malanka on Jan. 10 and this year will be held at the Langley Banquet Centre in Aldergrove. Featured at this year's Malanka will be a performance by the award-winning Yevshan Ukrainian Dancers. The troupe is made up of performers from many communities in the Fraser Valley including Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Aldergrove, Langley, Surrey and as far away as White Rock. Malanka has been a sell-out every year, so those wishing to attend shouldn't delay in getting their tickets. They're $50 each (or $25 for children age 12 and under), and can be obtained by phoning FVUCS Malanka ticket coordinator Lillian in Chilliwack at 604-792-1166.
Players Guild meeting
On Jan. 6 the Chilliwack Players Guild holds its next general meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Green Room at the Chilliwack Arts Centre. Light refreshments will be served afterwards and non-members are always welcome.
Travel display at SSS
Sardis secondary students present a front entrance display entitled On the Road: Travelling Safely in the Fraser Valley from Jan. 7-30. The display is the work of SSS students that illustrated a 2009 calendar to promote road safety and brain injury prevention.
Fine art photography
The next display on at Chilliwack City Hall Art Gallery (8550 Young Rd.) is the fine art photography of Laurie Mackie. "Through My Eyes" shows Mackie's colour and black and white photographic works that spotlight the unique landscape around us. Opening reception is Jan. 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and show continues until Feb. 26.
Once Upon a Mattress
The Chilliwack School of Performing Arts presents Once Upon a Mattress at the Chilliwack Arts Centre, Jan 16, 17, 22-24 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $13.50 for adults and $10,50 for students/seniors. There are special-priced performances on Jan. 15 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. for $7.
Inuk and the Sun
The second production of the University of The Fraser Valley season of theatre is Inuk and The Sun, a captivating fable by Canadian playwright Henry Beissel. Inuk and The Sun opens Jan. 16 in the theatre on the Chilliwack campus and runs: Jan. 17, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30 and 31 at 7;30 p.m., with two reduced-price previews Jan. 14 and 15 at 7;30 p.m. There will also be four matinee performances: Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. and Jan. 22 and 26 at noon. The Jan. 25 matinee will be a pay-what-you-can event, with a suggested minimum price of $8. Other ticket prices range between $8 to $17. Full Spectrum
On now at the City Hall Art Gallery is Jan Dawson's paintings with a focus on animal friends. In her paintings she endeavours to explore the Full Spectrum of her experience through the brighter joy and innocent beauty of animals and the natural world. Show is on until the new year. City Hall Art Gallery is at 8550 Young Rd. and is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
